I have over ten years experience photographing local Mixed Martial Arts competitions. I didn’t realize it at the time, but these events trained me to be a wedding photographer. These events are the culmination of years of training and often represent more than just nine minutes of competition. The emotion of a fight night is right up front and powerful. That emotion is the memory that matters, at a fight and at a wedding.
Like fights, weddings happen quickly, blink and you missed it. No do-overs. The action is fast, the light is bad, and as the photographer, it’s not about me. It’s about you.
I met my wife in high school, in 1985. That was the same year I was a yearbook photographer. My wedding was 20 years ago. My wife and I renewed our vows in November of 2020, in the middle of a chaotic and crazy year.
Many thanks to our friend who captured this image for us. Being on the other end of the camera was a different experience. I treated it the same way I will ask you to approach it. Offer up any suggestions you have, the spot was my suggestion, but be open to coaching at the same time. You will hear me say this over and over, good photography is a collaboration.
